Blount's disease – Causes and Treatments

Blount's disease is normally a growth disorder of the shin bone that causes the lower leg to angle inward. It can affects people at any time during the growing process, but often it happened in young children and adolescents. It is also known as tibia vara or osteochondrosis deformans tibiae.

Causes of Blount's Disease

Before going to understand blount's disease, we must know tibia and fibula — the two parallel bones that make up the lower leg. The fibula is thinner bone located exactly on the same side of the little toes. The larger bone, the tibia, is located on the other side. When a person stands, the tibia is the bone that carry most of our body weight.

In kids, there is a growth plate at the top of the tibia. This is called the physis, which is weaker than  bone. The job of the physis is to allow the bone to lengthen and grow. Sometimes, even the physis can bear more pressure, the inner part, just below the knee, gets compressed. It may stop making new bone, but the outer part continues to grow normally.

This bone growth under increased pressure from above causes the tibia to bow outward instead of grow straight. Blount's disease has much difference from bowlegs.

Doctors believe that the development of blount's disease is directly related to weight even though, there are other underlying factors with blount's disease. In general, it is common people of African heritage, kids who started walking at an early age, and those with a family member who also had it.

Treatments for Blount's Disease
